Reading Rockets offers a wealth of reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. Our reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in working with struggling readers who require additional help in reading fundamentals and comprehension skills development.

Program description

This 90-minute teleconference program addressed how to create whole class reading programs that promote reading success for all children.

Presenters

  • John T. Guthrie is professor of Human Development at the University of Maryland at College Park. From 1992 to 1997, he was the co-director of the National Reading Research Center, which emphasized classroom research on motivation and contexts for developing reading engagement. He has collaborated with teachers in developing and studying Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction, (CORI). He will discuss CORI, as well as introduce a videotape segment on how it is being used successfully in a school in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • Phyllis C. Hunter is a reading consultant and advisor to President George W. Bush. She has been a teacher, principal and special education professional in Texas for many years.
  • Peggy McCardle, Ph.D., M.P.H. is the Associate Chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, at the National Institutes of Health. She is director of the research program on Language, Bilingualism and Biliteracy Development and Disorders. Dr. McCardle has served as the Institute liaison to the National Reading Panel, in addition to leading the development of several new initiatives in literacy.
